As NFTs surged in popularity, Instagram needed a way to bridge creators, collectors, and fans in a trusted digital environment. The challenge was to validate a secure and user-friendly NFT wallet system that could handle blockchain assets while remaining compliant with data and privacy regulations.
We conducted rapid market validation, user research, and MVP design for a digital wallet that enabled creators and collectors to showcase and trade NFTs directly on Instagram. The project focused on privacy-preserving blockchain integrations, seamless wallet connections, and real-time asset verification from Ethereum and Polygon networks. The validated MVP and infrastructure groundwork were later adopted and scaled by Novi Pay.
The NFT wallet MVP was validated and deployed for testing within days, connecting users to Ethereum and Polygon wallets. The system allowed creators to share digital collectibles with automatic attribution, shimmer-effect displays, and verified metadata from OpenSea. The technology later evolved into Meta’s official digital collectibles rollout and Novi Pay integration, before being sunset due to regulatory compliance, and subsequently revisited in August 2025.

The Instagram NFT Wallet initiative explored how creators and collectors could seamlessly connect their digital wallets and showcase blockchain-verified collectibles in-app. The MVP proved that decentralized assets could coexist within a centralized social network while maintaining user privacy and design simplicity.
Users could connect Ethereum and Polygon wallets to view and display NFTs. Each collectible post featured a shimmer effect, on-chain metadata, and automatic tagging of both creator and collector, fostering transparency and authenticity in digital ownership.

The MVP design included integrations with Rainbow, MetaMask, and Trust Wallet, expanding later to Coinbase, Dapper, and Phantom. OpenSea metadata enrichment added verified collection names and descriptions, improving authenticity and discoverability.
Following successful validation, the NFT wallet architecture and learnings were integrated into Novi Pay for broader scaling under Meta’s fintech arm. However, by March 2023, due to compliance and regulatory pressures, digital collectibles support was sunset. Posts remained on Instagram but no longer displayed blockchain data.

The initiative resurfaced in August 2025 with renewed focus on creator monetization and NFT-based experiences, building upon the technical and market groundwork established in this MVP phase.
"The NFT wallet MVP proved that decentralized digital ownership could live inside a mainstream social platform without compromising privacy or usability."
